Opening Game

Sharks and Minnows

Sharks and Minnows is a fast running game that works well when children need to move before settling into the main Activity Days lesson. It needs almost no equipment and can be adjusted for small or large groups.

Time8 to 15 minutes
Best ForMedium or large groups
SpaceCultural hall, gym, field, or marked outdoor area
SuppliesCones, tape, or natural boundaries

How To Run It

  1. Mark two safe lines on opposite sides of the playing area.
  2. Choose one or two children to be sharks and have them stand in the middle.
  3. Everyone else starts as minnows on one side of the area.
  4. When a leader calls "swim," the minnows run to the opposite side while the sharks try to tag them.
  5. Tagged minnows become sharks for the next round.
  6. Keep playing until only a few minnows are left, then restart with new sharks.

Leader Tips

  • Use walking, skipping, or hopping instead of running if the room is small.
  • Remind children that tags should be gentle and below the shoulders.
  • Make the play area smaller for younger children and larger for older children.
  • Stop after several quick rounds while the group is still having fun.
