Temple Symbols Discovery
This activity introduces children to temple-related symbols in a respectful, age-appropriate way. The goal is not to explain sacred ordinances, but to help children notice that the temple points us to Jesus Christ, peace, light, growth, and covenant living.
How To Run It
- Begin by showing a picture of a temple and reminding the children that temples are holy places where we feel close to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
- Explain that symbols help teach truth, just like Jesus used stories and objects to teach lessons people could remember.
- Show one symbol at a time and ask what it might make them think about before sharing a simple meaning.
- Read a short statement, ask one question, and invite the children to draw or write one word they want to remember.
- Finish by bearing testimony that the temple helps point us to Jesus Christ and prepares us to make and keep sacred promises.
Teaching Notes For Leaders
- Keep the conversation simple and positive. Focus on Jesus Christ, reverence, holiness, and preparation.
- Avoid trying to explain sacred temple ordinances in detail.
- You can say that not every temple uses the same artwork or symbols, but many temple designs include beautiful reminders of gospel truths.
- If children ask deeper questions, it is fine to say that some things are learned later as we prepare more fully for the temple.

Simple meaning: The sun can remind us of the highest degree of glory, often called celestial glory. It also points to the brightest light, which helps leaders teach about the fullness of God's light and presence.

Invite: Share one way following Jesus Christ brings more light and truth into your life.
Moon
Simple meaning: The moon can remind us of terrestrial glory. Its light is real, but it is not as bright as the sun, which makes it a helpful symbol for different degrees of glory and different measures of light.
Ask: How does the moon help us think about light that is good and real, even when it is not as bright as the sun?
Invite: Think of one way reverence and obedience help us move toward greater light.
Stars
Simple meaning: Stars can remind us of telestial glory. They still give light, but less than the moon and sun, which can help children understand that scripture teaches different degrees of glory and increasing light.
Ask: What do the stars teach us about even small lights shining in the darkness?
Invite: Name one truth from the gospel that helps guide you as you keep growing toward more light.
Flowers
Simple meaning: Beauty, life, growth, and the way Heavenly Father helps us bloom.
Ask: What helps your testimony grow?
Invite: Choose one small thing you can do this week to grow closer to Jesus Christ.
Olive Branch
Simple meaning: Peace, reconciliation, and hope.
Ask: How can we help bring peace into our homes?
Invite: Think of one peacemaking choice you can make this week.
Beehive
Simple meaning: Work, unity, diligence, and helping build something good together.
Ask: Why does it matter when everyone helps?
Invite: Name one way you can be a helpful worker at home or church.
